About Us

Established in 1850 as a Catholic teacher training college, St Mary's has a long-standing reputation for academic excellence and the granting of university title is an exciting milestone in its history. With an original intake of just six students, St Mary's has now grown to around 6,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students across the four academic Schools. On 23rd January 2014, St Mary's University College, Twickenham, was awarded full university title by the Privy Council and became St Mary's University, Twickenham.

Nowadays, around a third of the offering at St Mary's is dedicated to teacher education and there is a growing number of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in subjects such as Sport, Drama, Theology and Business. The provision for international students, study abroad opportunities and overseas collaborative partnerships has also expanded. In recent years, there have been some major events at St Mary's.

  • On 17th September 2010, Pope Benedict XVI visited the campus as part of the first Papal visit to the UK since 1982.
  • A new Sports Centre, an £8.5 million asset for recreation, academic, elite and community sport, was officially opened in October 2011 by Lord Sebastian Coe.
  • In July 2012, St Mary's hosted athletes from ten nations as part of a pre-Games training camp for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Athletes and team members from South Africa, China, Japan, Ireland, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, Mozambique and Denmark all spent time using the state-of-the-art training facilities on campus.
  • On 23rd January 2014, St Mary's University College, Twickenham, was awarded full university title by the Privy Council and became St Mary's University, Twickenham.
  • During Rugby World Cup 2015 the University was chosen as a Team Base for the South African, New Zealand and Australian rugby teams.
  • In 2015 St Mary's celebrated its 165th anniversary and marked it with a number of exciting events both on campus in Strawberry Hill and in central London, including the official installation of our Chancellor Cardinal Vincent Nichols at Westminster Cathedral in May.
  • In the past couple of years Rugby World Cup winning coach Sir Clive Woodward, and leading human rights barrister Cherie Blair, were made Visiting Professors, and former Irish President Mary McAleese was appointed Distinguished Professor in Irish Studies.

Why?

  • Beautiful campus with modern facilities

    • St Mary's is located on a leafy campus in South West London, in the grounds of the original Strawberry Hill House, a world famous example of the 19th century Gothic Revival style. Alongside buildings steeped in history, students can find modern, state-of-the art facilities, and the university's recent development projects include a new library, media arts suite and extensive sports facilities.

    • Quality accommodation is available in on-campus halls of residence or the accommodation office can help you find local, student-friendly accommodation within easy reach.

  • Great location in London

    • Situated in the London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames, a safe, green suburb near the river, the campus is only half an hour from central London, offering students the best of both worlds.

    • Within walking distance are the towns of Teddington and Twickenham, where you can find a good range of shops, restaurants and pubs. A short bus ride will take you to Richmond and Kingston with an excellent range of cinemas, theatres, clubs and high-street shops.

    • If you want to take advantage of the world-famous attractions of the capital, frequent trains running from early in the morning to late at night take just 30 minutes to London Waterloo.

  • Welcoming and supportive community

    • Founded on Catholic values, St Mary's is an inclusive institution with a mission to provide students from all backgrounds and faiths with an excellent education. We have a welcoming community of around 6,000 students, almost 10% of whom are international, and a high level of support from our staff and student services, helping you to quickly feel at home.

  • Long history of excellence in teaching

    • Founded in 1850, St Mary's has a long and distinguished history in higher education. A good staff to student ratio and student-focused teaching contributes to 64% of our graduates achieving a final grade of 2:1 or above.

    • Our primary and secondary teaching programmes have been rated as 'Outstanding' by Ofsted, and in the Guardian 2017 University Guide, the university received 93% for teaching satisfaction, placing us in the top 20 in the UK.

  • World-leading research

    • St Mary's performed strongly in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) - a system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions.

    • Among the seven 'units of assessment' (subject areas) rated by the REF at St Mary's, English and Communications were rated as 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent' for 61% and 60% of their academic research respectively, and Sport and History were given the same top ratings for 50% of their research.

  • Choice and flexibility of programmes

    • With 39 undergraduate degree programmes, most of which can be combined as joint honours, St Mary's offers almost 150 undergraduate pathways in four broad subject areas: Arts and Humanities; Education, Theology and Leadership; Management and Social Sciences; Sport, Health and Applied Science.

    • We also offer eight foundation degree programmes, a range of primary and secondary PGCE teaching courses as well as many full and part-time postgraduate degree programmes.

  • Top 10 for employability

    • 95% of our graduates are in employment or further study within six months of completing their studies.

    • Our Centre for Workplace Learning (CWL) offers students the opportunity to undertake a work placement while they are studying with us, and our Careers Service is part of the University of London's Careers Group, the largest and most successful careers service in the UK.

  • High student satisfaction

    • The Times Higher Education (THE) recently ranked the University as the top London university for student experience and we placed third for International in the 2016 Whatuni Student Choice Awards.

  • Fantastic sports opportunities

    • St Mary's is one of London's top-performing sports institutions and provides students with state-of-the-art sports facilities equipped to world-class standards, as well as funding opportunities for high performance athletes.

    • Sports participation at all levels is regarded as an important element of university life and a wide range of clubs and activities are available to every student.

  • Active social life

    • In addition to the sports clubs and facilities, Students' Union societies ranging from drama to debating, psychology to gaming, ensure that just about all interests are catered for. Nightlife can be found right on campus, at the weekly Students' Union events, and within walking distance at local restaurants and bars.
